What is 360 Degree Evaluation System
The 360 Degree Evaluation System also known as multi-rater feedback, here employees get their feedback confidentially and anonymously from those people working with them. These people may be the managers, colleagues or their immediate bosses. In some cases external sources may also be added like suppliers or customers. This system is a complete mixture of around 12 different people who fill out feedback from. The feedback from comprises questions which covering workplace competencies. These questions are based on rating system which provide written comment option.
First this system was used in World War II by German military. There are some organizations use the results in decision making like pay and promotion. In United Sates of America one third organizations uses this system for feedback. According to some researches almost 90% of fortune 500 companies use this system. While using this, there is a great chance of creating conflict and it will be difficult to determine whose feedback is correct.
Managers within the organization uses 360 degree evaluation system to have a close eye on their strengths and weaknesses. 360 degree feedback system arrange the results in a tabular view which is helpful for the recipient. Both the Individual responses and response from peers and manager or others if any are combined which give employees a clear picture of their strengths and weaknesses. This feedback process empower the employees to anonymously give feedback to a coworker which is otherwise a little bit difficult. As a result, recipients have a clear view that how others in the organization observe them and this point give them a chance to adjust their conduct which will increase their job performance.
In many company 360 Degree Evaluation system is using for performance appraisal. But this system creates difficulties when companies’ lack of proper structure required for the system. This system targets mainly employees’ competencies and behavior in the workplace.
